Very small budget here. There is one possible alternative but I'll mention that last...

I had this idea of a DDR3 system. Please advise and let me know if this idea is A) good B) okay C) WHAT ARE YOU THINKING, MAN?!?
:)

Here is OPTION 1:
Mobo - $65

DDR3 - generic 2GB - $60

cpu - AMD AM3 Phenom II X2 235e - $65

I already have a case, burner and power supply

This is for my Ma! The Pentium 3 computer is dying... makes a loud noise whenever it's on....a high pitch that is really annoying. I tried to fix it once and vaccuumed it out but comes back. It also crashed a lot and was slow.

The computer tasks include videos, surfing, not much processing power is needed but it seems $60 is the price for a decent cpu....

She's currently using my P35 mobo, Q6600, 4GB DDR2 system which is overkill... right? So, i could build a new system for me or the above which is a nice budget build.

Any other ideas? I looked into G41 mobo, Core 2 Duo processors and some DDR2 RAM that I could find for cheap or used but I don't think it will be much less than above and it's not future proof at all.

So OPTION 2:
*cheap DDR2, core 2 Duo system.... probably not much cheaper, right? *OR build a new DDR3 system... I'm wondering if my current system will get a bit long in the tooth some time....but, a Q6600 is nothing to sneeze at, still, right? Maybe a budget DDR3 system is best as the memory can be upgraded when prices go down?

I'm not too particular about brands... I figure Gigabyte and MSI boards are the cheapest and any generic Kingston DDR3 RAM will be about $50 or a bit more.

Advice? :)
