Can I still upgrade my motherboard?

I currently have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Processor on an Abit KN9 motherboard and I was wondering if I could still upgrade it because I really don't have the money for an entire new pc.

Most likely no. I would look for a used combo on craigslist. The am2 am3 boards are pretty cheap at newegg, but would still cost $100 or more for a combo package.

Any reason why you would like to upgrade the motherboard and not the CPU or something else?

I currently have an am2 socket on my mb and I was asking if I could upgrade my processor.

I'm mainly doing this due to higher hardware demands on pc gaming.

I recently found a AMD HDX920XCJ4DGI Phenom II X4 920 Quad Core OEM Processor - 2.80GHz, 6MB Cache, 1800MHz.

does anyone know if i'd see much of an increase in preformence with this new processor.
