"no input signal" after changing both sticks of ram

Hello,
I have an HP pavilion desktop computer that was having issues. A knowledgeable friend, after looking at it all, said buy 2 new sticks of ram and then might need operating system reinstalled. Got the new ram today, swapped those, now it says NO INPUT SIGNAL on the screen when I try to boot it up. Took it back apart to make sure the ram is seated well, seems fine. Same error on screen. Any suggestions?
