Hey guys, I have recently decided to go with Intel after my stupid AM3 board died because the CPU came out of the socket when I was taking the heat sink off. I already have a nice Asus P55 board on the way. I went with P55 as I play at a resolution that I don't need the super power of two high end video cards at 16x each. Plus I got a steal on the mother board. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Anyways, I am having trouble deciding on the 760 or the 870. I live near a Micro Center and the 750 is 149.99 and the 870 is 229.99. I am not sure which one to get, I know that hyper threading doesn't make a worthwhile difference in gaming, but I am interested in the higher clock rate and what I would game in the instances that I am not gaming. Plus, why the hell not at that price, right?

As someone who runs an i7 860 i say go for the 870 at that price.
It games just as well as any i5 and has the added bonus of hyperthreading in other apps.
But if your budget allows you to upgrade your gpu the $90 dollars goes a long way to buy a better gpu.Difference between a 5850 and a 5870 for instance.
You really can't lose either way at those prices.

Well I have a 4870 right now, and since I play at 1440x900, it does well enough for now. Even with my Athlon II X4, everything was playable at maximum. Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, Sins of a Solar Empire. You name it, it played. So I am very happy with my GPU at the moment. If anything, I will add another 4870 for crossfire. I had two but I sold one to my brother. The Athlon I had just didn't feed them enough data. :\ But that won't be a problem soon. :)

Thank you Poisoner for asking this question. I have been searching the internet for 2 days hoping for the very same information.

I hope that I am not violating the rules by asking this question here instead of starting a new thread, but was wondering.
There aren't any Micro centers in my state, so for a person having to order everything from NewEgg, is the i7-870 worth the extra $80 over the price of an i5-760 ?

Things I am buying in September:

i5-760 or i7-870
Asus p7p55d-e pro
G-Skill ECO 4g (2x2)

I use my computer for games and internet mostly, plus very little guitar recording.

would overclocking the 760 overcome the lack of hyperthreading?

Thanks
