What To do to a hard drive if not working ?

if it has power and it not see you can try running some recovery software on it. it depends on what the issue is. on portable drives it could be the controller board in the case or the drive itself. if it the board..most drives work fine when connected to a pc.
if the unit under warranty i would do a rma if you cant get the data off.
