So I'm looking to upgrade my system. I do like to game occasionally but this is more for 3D max, After Effects, and Photoshop performance, as well as watching blu rays. I really want the 5800 series because of the Eyefinity capabilities (I have a displayport monitor). I was thinking about the 5830 because of it's price point (,~$250) but I haven't seen too many positive reviews on it and have heard better things about the 5850 (~$330).

So my question is, which is more efficient for what I'm trying to do. If it's the 5850, thats fine but I also don't want to spend money I don't have to. Also, if you have any other suggestions please give me a heads up.

Thanks in advance.

If you aren't going to game, then take a look at HD 5750 too,it will be fine for 3D max, after effects,PS....
But if your choices are only between 5830 and 5850,i would go for 5830 since you didn't mention any gaming

Well, if you do not want to spend the extra 50 bucks for around a 15% - 25%increase in performance on games then the 5830 will be a major upgrade for the 250 GTS for gaming and watching blue ray

I, personally, would save up the extra 50 bucks for the 5850

That card will have you set for at least a year and a half

(i got my calculations off of the gaming charts, Mass Effect 2, LFD2, BFBC2, Dragon Age Origins)

What is your resolution?

Hope this helps

I have 2 monitors right now, an Asus 23.6 running at 1080 and a 20 inch Samsung at 720 (i think). Im looking to add a third monitor, hence the need for eyefinity.

I do like the suggestion of a 5700 series, I didn't know that they also supported eyefinity. Although I'm looking for this to be as future-proof as possible with a sub $300 budget. I know I'm asking a lot and I appreciate the input.

If you wanted to play games, then i would recommend getting a HD 5850 but since you don't,then a 5750/5770 suffices

The pricing has gotten more favorable for the 5830 lately. If you look hard enough you can get a 5830 for 219.99 and there was one with a 20 dollar rebate making it 199.99.
Thats the same time the cheapest 5850 is around 310.00.
Literally changes daily.
For 219.99 its a OK value.
Today at newegg, best price 5850~305.00 5830~230.00 5770~160.00
Its not coincidence theres about 70.00 dollars between models :)
It can be argued from different pov which is the 'best' value, they all offer similar features , except for gaming power. (the 5830 uses about the same power as the 5850)
But still considered efficient.
IMO, my first choice would be a model with two-dvi,display port. Then you could go display port to vga. That seems to be the most hassle free setup to get going from the reading I've done. Thats if you don't have a display port monitor to begin with. You have to use the display port in a 3 monitor setup, eyefinity or stand alone.
