site:tomshardware com hard drive not detected

Hi, I just built my first computer and everything works fine until the computer boots up. It says adapter 1 no hard drive detected but it is recognized in the bios. I am using my old hard drive from my other computer which has windows xp on it. Everything is connected and the hard drive is connected by a SATA cable. When the computer gets to the windows xp loading screen, the computer restarts. Any suggestions please

  1. You will be able to use your old HDD for storage, but you won't be able to boot from it as is. That's because Win XP was configured with the drivers for your old motherboard.

You will need a Windows XP preinstall SATA driver for your new motherboard. Hit the F6 key during the install process and point Windows to this driver.
