Nvidia geforce 9600M GS dual monitors

Hello, I have my laptop hooked up to a second monitor, the dell sp1908fpt and though I cannot get it to do it now, I know I saw it support higher res than 1280x1024 when I was screwing around with video settings and it was set as the primary monitor (no second). Anybody know how to do this in dual mode with it as my secondary monitor?

Any ideas? is it driver related? If I install the dell monitor drivers do I risk messing up my display options for my laptop? Any advice is appreciated!
