What i7 processor could I use??

I have a Dell Inspiron 580. Service tag 8HVFQL1. Can I upgrade the i 5 processor to a i7 without changing the motherboard? I upgraded the PS to a 750 watt one so I think that is covered. I am currently using a I5-650, 3.2, 4MB, Clarkdale, 73W, C2

Your motherboard is capable if supporting i7-8xx CPUs. However, I highly doubt your BIOS will support it due to dell only offering i3 and i5 with the Inspiron 580.

But! It seems the i5-760 is an upgrade option on the dell website for the Inspiron 580. This is an awesome quad core CPU that is a for sure upgrade from your current i5-650 dual core (assuming you can utilize 4 cores). I can't guarantee it will work, but that's your best bet IMO.

The i5-760 is pretty much an i7 minus the hyper threading, very much worth it.

Careful of those CPU temps, you'll have MOD's deleting posts and closing threads if you aren't careful!!

The thing to remember is that even if your motherboard maybe able to technically support a cpu, that doesn't mean it will work. Without the BIOS being microcoded to recognize that type of cpu, then the BIOS will simply not read the cpu correctly or at all and one of two things can happen.

1. that CPU may work but will take a big performance hit.

2. Your motherboard will simply not post.

If you don't see a BIOS update to support that type of CPU model then it's either not going to work correctly or at all when you try to use it.

Well i called Dell Tech Support and asked about the i5 760n upgrade. I was told the 650 chip was soldered in and couldnt be removed. Is this possible?

I guess a new MB/CPU combo might be in the future.

It very well could be, I have heard of manufacturers doing this before and I wouldnt put it past Dell to do that either. Maybe Delluser1 could answer that question for you.

At least you didn't buy a mac. *shrug

I've read of this, you'll need to replace the mobo w/ the CPU. Assuming the tech isn't an idiot.
