GT 220 intermittent "alt-tabbing"?

Hi, I just bought a GT 220 and got the latest Windows 7 drivers. It runs games way better than my old radeon X1650, but since installing it I've run into a REALLY annoying glitch in certain games and I have no idea what's causing it.
Basically, my screen goes black except for the cursor, and then the desktop will flash, and then back to the game, which takes at least 10 seconds to resume. It's just as if I pressed alt-tab.

My motherboard is an Asus P5GD1, which apparently only supports PCI-E 1.6 or something like that- the GT 220 is 2.0, so I really really hope that isn't what's causing the pseudo crashes.

edit: the only other thing I changed was the refresh rate, which I upped to 75 from 60. After setting it back I think the problem might have gone away, but would that make sense? Does anybody know if refresh rate could cause something like this?

edit 2: nope still doing it.
