So I got a Mushkin Enhanced chronos 120gb that i'm currently using as a boot drive. I would want to update the firmware (since it's suppose to improve performance and etc) and looking at their instructions, they said that it might wipe the drive data.

Is it a actual concern or should i just backup/reinstall the applications/data.

there is no MIGHT - either it DOES or it Does NOT - you should read through it again

if there's data you need, back it up - you would have to re-install all programs if it gets wiped, so there's no point in trying to back them up

that means you better back up any data you need before you attempt the update

Before upgrading the firmware, be sure to back up important data
to a separate storage medium. Complete data loss may occur as a
result of the firmware update process!
