My ad blocker (Norman) reported that attempts were being made to alter some
registry keys. I blocked them, but now I can't launch anything hardly.
Quite a few will launch Winzip. Can't launch many of the Control panel
icons. Email is the only thing working, so I can receive any communications!

See "How to Restore the Operating System to a Previous State in
Windows XP" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306084).
Scan your system for malware with Ad-aware (http://www.lavasoft.com)
and a good virus scanner.
