this stupid computer likes to let out the magic smoke. its like the 3rd time! and its getting really annoying!
the psu just kinda blew up...bang, smoke, and it restarted, but now it seems to be running normally again. it smells terrible but at least it still works.
but anyhow, what could be causing my computer to kill (or temporarily explode) so many psus?
whats causing this?
is it ok to continue using this psu, which is still working but just smells funny?

More about : crud

your psu doesnt look overloaded by your config
visualy inspect mobo for bad capacitors.
if they are split and yellowish that may be why.
Does is smell like ammonia?

If something lost its magic smoke it could be very bad for the rest of the system, you may have voltages or ripple going out of spec and not know it.

If there are no bad caps, see if you might have blown one of the VRMs or maybe something in the transient filtering.

The TT 430 is not a 430W unit, its at best a 350W unit based on its hardware secrets review, and if it was a few years old it might just have been its time to die.

If something in the PSU is smoking then it is time to get a new PSU -- you may have gotten lucky this time and not burned something else out but continuing to use a PSU that has come that close to a blowup is asking for trouble !!

well this sucks since you really shouldn't keep using the PSU (as it could be giving out bad voltages now)

Quit buying junk PSU's Quit using this now, you could ruin your PC, or burn down your house.

I wouldn't say overall thermaltake make junk PSU's. I have the thermaltake tr2 470w which has been going strong for close to 5 years. I know 2 other people who have the 470 and 420w versions. They look a lot different from the one in that review. When you go to thermaltakes website, the 430w looks different from the rest of the series, looks like a dud model from the series - http://www.thermaltake.com/product_colorbox.aspx?cid=C_...

Looks like the worst possibility I've mentioned on your previous thread became reality. That's too bad. Just accept this as a lesson in the future. When you grow up, you'll look back on your experience with electrical problems on PC and learn from it. Maybe it's not the PSU, it could be the electrical stability in your house. But if it is the free PSU, then you've experienced what a bad PSU can do to your system first hand.

May your motherboard rest in peace...

I guess that's good news if you were just looking for an excuse to upgrade.

Amd 64 x2 2.5ghz cpu
160gb sata seagate (eww)
3gb ram
Dvdrw sata lightsribe

dont bother with hacked windows versions

$100 U.S.? maybe ati radeon 5750? im not from US so not too sure on the price of this, but a 5750 would be the lowest I would go.

forget ssd just get a SATA hdd and put the extra towards a better video card.

You might want to be more carefull on what you post here that could be used as incriminating evidence. =(

Also wondering how you are getting a lot of these for free but please don't answer.

If this is the third time your PSU has blown it may not just be because its 430(aka 350) it may be because of power issues in your house, I.E abnormal fluctuations. Just go out and buy a cheap hyena or such generic PSU 450w or better just to be on the safe side.

As for the OS, don't use hacked versions. Go get Ultimate and use a OEM code ^^ (That you brought online of course)

GTX 260 or a HD 5770 should compliment your cpu. Anything more and your cpu will just slow it down.

For an OS, I recommend picking up the full version of Windows 7 Home Premium. You can find it for $150 if you shop around, it's good for use on 3 PCs simultaneously, you can transfer the license to a new PC easily, and it has all the features that you need. Win7 Ultimate and Professional add very little functionality to the nonbusiness user.
