I've been looking at storage and backup solutions for a while and now need to really get on it as my system almost crapped out on me with a 8 month old backup available. I know backup, backup, and more backup. I have a slightly older setup I can use to complete the build; EVGA 132-CK-NF78-A1 nForce 780i SLI w/ 6 SATA II ports capable of RAID 5, Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz, OCZ SLI-Ready Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400). All I need to grab is a smaller case than what those I currently have and a PSU.
My questions would be what size PSU would I need to run this with 4 to 6 1 - 2 TB drives (haven't decided on drive sizes)? Video card doesn't require extra power. I keep hearing about the free program call FreeNAS and considering using that for the box. I was wondering if I wanted to add other software later to stream vid or music would that cause a problem with FreeNAS? Also, do I need to load this software on a separate drive than my storage/ backup RAID? Lastly, I'm looking at using at least 4 SATA II drives in the RAID, what would be a good, dependable, and not overly expensive 1 or 2 TB drives to get? Sure I have more questions but that will do for starters. Thanks
