So I currently have the following specs for my mobo:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01701270&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&site=null&key=null&product=3978592#N92

I am looking at adding another stick of ram to hit 4g and also upgrading my processor to a quad core for gaming (bargain gaming). I found this processor on New Egg but I'm not sure if it'll work. Will it? Is there something better for the buck?

Side note: I have a 9800GT 1g DDR3 GeForce card. Is there something better for the buck? I play Rift and run the game on medium settings but it gets laggy. I used to play WoW and I ran the game on medium and it ran consistently @60 FPS. Thanks in advance for any advice.

There is a conflicting info on the HP motherboard page. They say that only AM2+ CPU's are supported then list Athlon X3 and X4 which are AM3 cpu's. With out getting confirmation of which is correct then your best bet would be either Phenom II 920 or 940BE, both are AM2+!

Ahh not sure how I overlooked that. Great find and thanks for the response. With that being said, should my fan be able to handle cooling it? I have a 550W power supply so I would assume that'll be fine.

The wattage on that CPU is 125watts If you had a Athlon X2 6000+ then most likely the cooler would be big enough. If you had a lower powered CPU (less than 90watts) then most likely you would need a new aftermarket fan.

One last thing and I'll be all set. For my processor it says "AMD Athlon X2 7550" so I'm assuming I should be ok? I want to make sure that I don't forget anything and I truly appreciate your assistance and repsonse(s).

You probably would be OK with the cooler since the X2 7550 is a 95watt CPU just monitor your temps to begin with. You will need new thermal paste http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=503&name=Thermal-Paste&
I do not have any experience with those at TD but they should all work.
