I'm very ready to replace my 3 year-old Sony Vaio R505-DL with
something a bit more up-to-date. The Dell Latitude x300 looks good for
what I'm interested in
- small and light
- pretty good performance
- lots of connections
- docking station
It seems like that model has been around for a long time - I know
sometimes companies make running changes to a model (i.e., when it
shipped at first it would have a 20G HD and now it has a 60G, etc.) -
not sure if this is case.
And then I have this worried feeling that I'll buy it and two weeks
later Dell (or someone else, I guess) will come out with a direct
replacement that is much much more state of the art.
I read sites like www.gizmodo.com and so on but I haven't seen
anything about products like this - not quite spectacular enough for
blog coverage, so I'm posting here to see if anyone has any knowledge
of where to look, what's coming next, or anything else.

You may be thinking of its predecessor, the x200... I don't think the
x300's been around for more than a year, or so.

No, I'm thinking of the x300. I see USENET posts on the model going
back to Aug/Sep 2003. So, a bit more than a year. Your post implies
that isn't a long time, but given the flood of new products coming
out, it may be. I guess that was what I was looking for some insight
on - what is the lifespan (in product offering, not in usage for the
customer) of a product? Will Dell sell the exact product for 3 years?
Will they make running changes?

When I purchased my x200, it was a number of years before the x300
was released. My observation, with regard to Dell's Latitude line,
is that they tend not to change configuration quite as fast as the
Dimension line.
Other manufacturers, such as Sony, seem to change their lineup
much quicker. (One of the *many* reasons I wouldn't buy a Sony.)
To try and accurately state whether, or not, a manufacturer will
keep a certain model on the shelf for any given length of time
is pure speculation.
If you always wait for the "new and improved model" to come out,
before you buy, you'll never buy anything! <g>
