I need help trying to figure out if I should upgrade my 2gb 533mhz ram to 4gb 800mhz or buy a faster graphics card upgrade from an ATI 4670 512mb to video card at the max price of $120 since the ram is going to cost near $100 anyways.

my gaming resolution is 1024x768 and 1280x1024 at the moment.
I'm having to use my old CRT monitor for now that's why the resolution is so low.

I think my GPU is good enough for these resolutions, but some of my games
I play still stutter and lag.

the games I've been playing are:
Far Cry 2
Oblivion
Fallout 3

oh and btw my processor is an AMD Athlon 5000+ at 2.8ghz.

Athlon x2 or no?

If not, your GPU is the most I'd ever put into it. If so, get an HD5670.

RAM would help in Fallout. The HD4670 is a great card for those resolutions as well.

if you are running win xp 32 bit then their is no need to get more RAM, 4GB won't affect your game play. Vista and Win 7 will see an improvement from 4GB.

if you have a solid 400w PSU, look into the ATI 4850 and Nvidia GTS 250. All are around your price point.

Grab an HD5670. It'll do very well at your resolution; any other card is wasted performance.

I believe you're referring to the memory limitation of a 32 bit OS, which is 3.5 gb as the cap. JD will still benefit from the upgrade of 2 gb to 3.5 gb, just not as much as he would with the 64 bit OS (which would get him that additional 500 mb of ram).

So JDh440, please tell us what OS you're using?

Either way however, the video card could use an upgrade. The 5670 is a decent choice and is definitely within your price range. Within the next 2 years however I would highly advise on saving up for a new rig.

I'm using Windows 7 32bit right now.
I have a 64bit copy that I'll use if I get the 4gb of ram.
thanks for the replies so far.

i am referring to the fact that on Win XP - DX9 game benchmarks, there is no benefit past 2GB of RAM as opposed to similar benchmarks run on DX10 and DX11.

JD will not benefit moving from 2GB to 3GB on a DX9 system (aka Win XP) system. The point is moot since he runs win7 and can benefit from it.
