I7 Build. Last minute Check.

Thankyou readers of Tom's Hardware, I am about to finalize a purchase of a (after rebates), $1,480 system.
I was just looking to double check & see if there are any better products out there that would work better in my system.
I recently just picked up Three 23.6" LCD's, and hope to use them with the video cards below.

Please, any constructive criticism or compliments would be greatly appreciated.

More about build minute check
  1. ^ Any reason for 2x 9800GTX+ ?? Are you going to buy those now ??
and main usage of the PC ??
  2. looks good but get this memory instead
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6044637&sku=C13-6182

a bit better for same price

and if you can spend a bit more money twin 4870 would be much better however it is ATI.... there about 160 each
  3. movies/gaming/picture editing.

and I need 2 cards to support my 3 monitor setup, no?
  4. There's a few things I would suggest.

    1. I'd go for the SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 1TB, it may be SATA II, but I doubt the WD Caviar Black SATA III can really make use of that extra bandwidth, and the Spinpoint would still be faster, and save $30 in the process.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185

    2. Also, I'd go for the HD 5850 instead if you don't mind paying around $70 extra, it's faster than 9800 GTX+ in SLI, uses less power and is more expandable.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102884

    3. Instead of the H50, go for the Thermalright Venomous-X instead, it does a better job and is around the same price.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835109030

    4. With your SSD, if you can spend an extra $80, this would be much faster and has 10 GB more capacity:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227528

If you're only using your SSD as a boot drive, then this would be faster (10 GB less, faster speed though):

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227468

    5. If you're ever thinking of three way CFX/SLI then you'll want a case with eight expansion slots like the Silverstone Raven RV02, which is pretty nice case for ~ $30 more.

    6. Faster and cheaper RAM is available, this kit costs $10 less than your current kit after rebate and has better timings:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145286

That about sums it up. Good choice on the PSU though.
  5. ^ If you want to run 3 monitors, then why not go with the latest ATI cards??
And are you planning to game on 3 monitors or just 1 monitor while gaming??

    And some suggestions...
RAM - Cheaper and better timings
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145236

    PSU + CASE
    Antec 900 + XFX 750W
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.428913

HDD - Samsung F3 1TB - I doubt you would notice any performance difference between this one and the WD...

Could you show me some of the latest ATI cards which support 3 monitor connections?

The WD black has significantly better response times than the f3 and should speed up all applacation loading and bootup like almost 10percent over the f3 at times from what I've read. But considering you have an ssd for that I guess the f3 would be better option seeing as it transfers large files faster

the ATI 4870 would be equal to a brand new gtx 480 and is much less money 160 each and will support 4 moniters with crossfire 2 dvi on back

This is a PCI Express 2.1, will it work with my MOBO?
And this one would allow me to use the 2 DVI outputs, and 1 HDMI output simultaneously?
  10. HIS H587FN1GD Radeon HD 5870 1GB
    ~$351 after Promo code -
    10% off w/ promo code VGA061710, ends 6/30
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161329

But the downside is that your monitor needs to have a Display port or you would have to use an active adapter though...
And will you be gaming on all the 3 monitors or just 1 monitor while gaming??

    Just 1 Monitor most likely.
And No the monitor does not, but I notice that card has 2x DVI + 1x HDMI, couldn't I just use those 3 outputs? and leave the display port?
  12. ^^ No you would need to use 1 o/p from the Display port...
  13. my twin 4870 still better 2GB of memory not one and 4 dvi outputs---same price as one 5850
  14. gkay09 said:

    Why is that?

So on all monitors with 2x DVI + 1x HDMI (or 1x SVIDEO), its just a tease? Can you not use all 3 simultaneously?

And if i was to just stick with 2 cards, what else would you suggest over the 9800's I currently have listed.
  15. ^ Well we would have to ask ATI that question...
Really that is a major downside of the newer ATI cards, if you wish to run 3 monitors...
You would have to use the Display port if you will be using 3 monitors...

And if you were to stick with 3 monitors, then the HD 5770
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121363

But news is floating around the net that Nvidia will be launching new mainstream cards by Mid-July...So if you want to stick with Nvidia, then waiting would certainly be a good option...

no you can use 3 monitors at simultaneously with the 5850 or any other graphics card with 3 ports its no tease

No this is only with ati cards from my knowledge. I have 470 with three ports and I'm pretty sure I'm limited to two monitors.
  18. you should be banned from saying something like that. Don't try to help people if you have no f****** clue what your are talking about, My 295 can run 3 at once... MY 295!!! MY 480 and 470 can run 3 at once!!! My old gts 250 can run 3 at once!!! Any card above gts 250 and or 5570 will have no problem running as many monitors as it has ports.

hay I guess I flipped out there^^^, your 470 should have 2 DVI and 1 mini HDMI which you can with the right cable go mini hdmi to hdmi or mini hdmi to dvi they sell those everywhere very common cables

also the 5850 using it's display port can support up to six monitors/ 2 dvi 1 hdmi , and 3 from the display port as long as your card manufacture builds it to the ATI model because sometimes they can leave out ports at one point I got a 5970 with only 2 dvi lol

I know it has 3 ports I own one ^^. But I am pretty sure it only supports 2 monitors at the same time. Can you give me a link to where it is stated that 3 screens can be supported at the same time? Maybe the 295 can due to the dual gpu and all but the 470 doesn't support it.

Can you tell me the best card I can get for under 200 which would support 3 monitors?
You seem to be more knowledgeable!
  22. Ok it's not because I express less cockyness and more uncertainty that I am not as knowledgeable. Here are some links supporting my claims that nvidia does not support 3 screen on one GPU.

    http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/33709-nvidia-s-3d-vision-surround-game-changing-experience-4.html
And I quote "As we have already mentioned, SLI is a necessity when it comes to using both NVIDIA’s 2D Surround and 3D Vision Surround." And as you may know surround is nvidia's name for 3 monitors.

As I said it could be different with a 295 due to the dual gpu thing but these links make you look very stupid

As for the OP's question As I've pointed out your only single card solution is ati. In which case I'd go for the 5770. Taking 2 nvidia cards in sli is also a possibilty but all of nvidia's cheaper cards are dx10. You could ALso get 1 good nvidia card and one not so good one as PPU and you will be able to hook up 3 monitors. But again nvidia doesn't sell any sub 200 dx11 cards.

So I would say go for a 5770
  23. IF gaming is on your mind though any sub200 card is seriously underpowered compared the rest of your system. Also if you want to game on those 3 screens then you'll want a 400+ gpu solution at the least
  24. His link that shows how many monitors you can run with sli is only if you want to run 3D on all 3 monitors which I highly doubt, your sli gtx 9800 will run 2 each so up to 4 monitors at once, if you want to game sli gts 250's for more power about $210, however if your not going to run 3D your setup is fine just google how many monitors you can use with the gtx 9800 (you will see 2 at once) and just double that if you have 2,
  25. Build looks good and 3 screens wow...

I never said 9800gtx sli wouldn't run 4 monitors but it doesn't support dx11 so ati is a better choice. All I said was that your claims that you can run 3 screens of one nvidia gpu are false. And for gaming on three srceens 9800gtx sli is relatively underpowered.
  27. Yea he's right get the 5770 does what you want it to at the price you want it at.
