So i have a problem right now, im trying to upgrade my computer's 250 to a 500. I want to clone the drives and i have two sata cables but only one power connector. I have a power supply from an old computer that has the power cable. Would i run into any trouble by using that seperate power supply to power only the HDD, then using the SATA cable for the computer? I cant do a clean wipe because i need to save some stuff and i have no access to an external and the files are too big for dropbox.

It should work fine, you will just need to hotwire the second PSU so that it turns on. Here's a guide on how to do it: http://www.techwarelabs.com/guides/misc_mod/psumod/ Or, you could always buy a Molex to SATA power adapter.

Thanks, I have that second power supply in a case right now and it has a motherboard in it, for it to turn on does it just need to be plugged into the mobo? I dont think it has a cpu or ram in it though if that matters.
