Toshiba Satellite lid swtich

My lid switch has been getting worse and worse until finally this
morning the little piece of plastic that operates the mechanism fell
off. Now the screen backlight doesn't turn on, making it unusable. The
model is the Satellie 3000-100.

Does anyone have any ideas how to sort this? I took the facia off and
the little piece of plastic was mounted inside a tiny enclosed metal
box, meaning I can't really get at whats inside it easily (if at all).
I looked in the bios (plugged in external monitor) and couldnt see a
setting for it.

Any help would be very much appreciated, as my laptop is now virtually
useless.
