I recently ordered two Samsung 830 256 GB SSDs for use in my computer in a RAID 0 configuration. They have not arrived yet, but I have some questions to ask the community for when they do.
Assuming this is important information, my motherboard is an ASUS M4A79T Deluxe which only has SATA II (3Gb/s) ports on it. I am also running Windows 7 64-bit.
My first question is, will my motherboard slow down my RAID array and should I look towards getting a motherboard with SATA III in the near future? Also is the 3Gb/s the speed given to each individual SATA port on the motherboard or to all of the ports?
Second, what stripe size should I set for these SSDs in the RAID array? I currently run two 500 GB Caviar Blacks in RAID 0 and for their setup I used the default stripe size (I believe it was 64 KB). What stripe size should I set for the SSDs and what stripe size should I set for my HDDs?
Also, I believe that TRIM in RAID 0 is not supported. Is this a problem? Can't I solve the issue of garbage collection by simply doing a secure erase of the drive every so often?
Also, please explain the differences between formatting and secure erase. I believe you are always supposed to do a secure erase with a SSD but why and how can this be done?
Any other suggestions (ex. changes I should make inside of Windows for the SSDs) are also appreciated. Just so that no one asks, yes I do have 3.5" to 2.5" adapters.
