I'm looking into purchasing a bigger PSU, however; I do not know if it will burn out my motherboard. I'm quite familiar with computers, but I do not understand how the Power supplies work.

Here is my motherboard:

Here is my computer:

I want to purchase a graphics card that will handle modern games at medium to high settings. I currently have quite a small monitor and tend to keep it that way. The maximum resolution my monitor achieves is 1024x768.

I'm looking for the biggest Power supply possible for this motherboard and I am looking for a graphics card capable of running any game on the market; even if it's at medium or low settings. I normally play Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Sims 3, and would like to be able to play Battlefield Bad Company 2. I would like to be able to play Battlefield 3 that comes out this year.

I just need to know if a bigger power supply is possible first, and if it is, I need a suitable graphics card for my criteria. Thank-you for your help!

You will need a new Power Supply to install a better Graphics Card. I would go with a 500W, and the ATI HD5770 if you just want basic gaming.

The Corsair HX520 or similar would be a great choice for your setup.

Would a 500W power supply do any damage to my motherboard? 500W's is double of what my current power supply is. I'm just worried that it will ruin my motherboard and other computer parts.
