I believe you need to have Direct X 9.0 installed at least. That error
sounds like you don't have Direct 3D (Direct X) installed. Just
guessing. Would help more to know your systems specs, especially the
video card and video driver set.

I have installed the Direct X contained into the AOD cd...

My video card is an Abit Radeon RX600 Pro.
The sound card is a Sound Blaster Audigy 4.

It's a cruddy suggestion, but I feel I need to be a wee bit of posting:-
Uninstall, restart.
Install, restart.
Sometimes just restarting after an install - or reinstalling - can do
wonders for crazy never-heard-of-before error messages.
Other than that, yes, it smells fishy, something like a Direct X problem.
Try this to give McG more information:-
Start menu> Run> dxdiag> ok.
You'll need to wait a moment, depending on your computer speed for it to
check DX.
First thing to do is check down the bottom of the first tab that you
definitely have DX 9 installed.
Then click 'Save all information...', save to a .txt. file, then copy the
contents - don't attach! - into a reply here.

You may try downloading the latest DirectX (9.0c) which has some patches
to 9.0. M$ is patently lousy at getting their software right the first
time out and I'm pretty sure AOD came with their first version.

Thank you for the tip, I've fixed up the problem: my video card's
drivers were not installed! :-)
Now the game runs wonderfully and I'm wandering about the rooftops of
Paris...

Ta-da! Yay! Hope you enjoy it (the good parts, that is).
