I bought a brand new external hard drive (Hitachi HDS721050CLA362 500Gb) over 6 months ago, and I never took it out of the package until today. It is supposed to be plug n play, but when I plug it in, VISTA does not recognize that it is there. I read a bunch of forums and found that it was in Disk Management, under Disk1, but it wasn't given a drive names, so I did that. It shows up in Device Manager under Disk Drives. So, now it will show up in My Computer as a drive, but it asks me to format it first. I didn't think I would have to format it since it's a plug n play. I tried formatting it, and after hours and hours, it finally said "uanble to format disk drive." I'm at a loss. Now what?? :cry:  :cry:  :cry:

In disk management, try to delete the volume and create a new one.

If that didn't work, I would attempt to set up the disk using the partition manager in a linux live boot disk.

If that didnt work, I would run a disk diagnostic utility. Toshiba has one for their Hitachi branded hard drive's on their website.

To create a live bootable disk and configure disks / partitions:

Download Linux Live USB Creator (Lili) @ http://www.linuxliveusb.com/en/download
Download Kubuntu @ http://www.kubuntu.com/getkubuntu
follow steps 1 ~ 3
Boot from the disk
"K menu" -> Applications -> System -> Partition Manager

I would try using a different usb port, also keep the cord away from anything else as much as possible. I would have the other usb connections on opposite sides or if possible, unplugged.

I would try it in a different PC all together if you still haven't gotten it running. If you can't take it back to the store you bought it from, talk to the manufacture, it's still under warranty and let them know your story. Hopefully they'll just replace the drive for you.

Pay special attention to his Step 5.

ANY new empty HDD MUST have some preparation for any OS to begin using it. The steps are to Create a Partition (this defines a space on the HDD to be used as one "drive", and creates the unit's Partition Table), and Format that new Partition (this installs a File System so the space can be used). Some systems call the two steps together "Initializing" the drive. BOTH steps can be done in Disk Management's LOWER RIGHT pane by RIGHT-clicking on the Unallocated Space of the new drive and choosing the right option. In recent versions, the two steps are done as one step to make it easier. Older versions did it as Create Partition first, then right-click on the new Partition and Format it.

brand new 1 Tb toshiba external hard disk....it is detected in device manager and when i go to Disk management i see it...and when i try to create a simple volume it goes through some steps like partition size etc but stops at formatting step saying "operation not supported by the object" or "unable to finish.please refresh the view or close disk management and restart again".However wen i reopen disk management the unallocated space is changed to logical(sometimes free space too) but still cant format....Now windows detects it but says you need to format it before u use.....wen i select quick format or format the result is unable to format
