4 pin fan into 3 pin mobo?

Hey guys,
Basically I'm wanting to connect a 4pin case fan to a motherboard that has a 3pin system fan slot, (mobo is a gigabyte MA-770T-ES3). How could I do this? Would I need an adapter?

Furthermore is it important to connect the case fans to the motherboard at all or could I just connect straight to the power supply?

Thanks for the reply. Given a choice I assume it's better to connect the fan directly to the psu?

I use the fan headers on my motherboards instead of pulling extra cables from the PSU that hinder airflow. Then again it is all depending on the location of the fans, there is no better or worse in this case more about convenience.
