Do you think my old card (HD4850) performance will improve?
I'm just too afraid to try, i just don't want to update my driver (8.7) with the latest one and got everything mess up... :)

^ +1
But set a restore point first:)
May 26, 2010 7:13:14 PM

I dunno about this one, the 10.4's are so good, I might actually skip a driver release for once. Thanks again as ususal maziar.
May 26, 2010 7:17:24 PM

Lost performance in resident evil and Dirt 2, Crysis stayed the same and so did heaven benchmark 2.0

Not impressed
May 26, 2010 7:26:57 PM

I guess i will stay with my current driver... :D

you are welcome :)  will download and post the results
my main concern is still the 2D problems which are less with Cat 10.4,but not completely gone
May 26, 2010 8:35:03 PM

Im still using 9.11 drivers and see no reason to change yet.

I updated my Sapphire 5870-1GB to Catalyst 10.5 from 10.4
I noticed when idle, the card now clocks around 400Mhz, use to downclock to around 157Mhz. The memory used to idle at around 300MHz I believe, now it stays at 1200Mhz. Idle temps went from 29C to 40C in a room that is about 75F (24C). Flight Simulator X seemed to play the same with the new 10.5
May 28, 2010 4:54:07 PM

I have seen some users reporting that their temp has risen.
Do a clean install of 10.5 and check the temps again,if you don't know how to perform a clean install, then here is an instruction
1_Download and install "Driver sweeper" from Guru3d.com and install
2_Go to add/remove programs and uninstall the driver and reboot
3_Boot to safe mode and open driver sweeper, then click on ATI and then click on clean
4_Reboot and boot normally to windows and install the new drivers after that you need to restart, and its done
May 28, 2010 5:35:17 PM

I observed no anomaly in CCC 10.5. I have Radeon HD5770. The temps are the same as CCC 10.4 or earlier. It is 41 deg C when ambient is around 22-23 deg C.

I suggest you to remove CCC 10.x from Programs in Control Panel and do a bit of a cleaning in Registry
Remove HKCU\Software\Ati keys
Remove HKLM\Software\Ati keys
Remove HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Ati keys ( note: some of the
keys may be named AMD. Be careful with them. Read the descriptions on the
right pane. They should point to Ati display adapter. )

Finally, remove Ati HD5xxx series Display Adapter in Device Manager. You can also tick Remove drivers checkbox.

After rebooting as requested, you can install the new CCC. This way CCC installs cleanly without being affected from the previous settings.
May 28, 2010 5:47:44 PM

You shouldn't have to do all that in this day and age, I've never removed drivers via driver sweeper, just installed the new drivers over the top of the older ones and never had a problem except with these 10.5's : /

Right, but if people are having issues that might be related to a bad install, then the most accurate way to diagnose the issue is to do the safe/time consuming driver install. I do it every time I update, it's worth the extra 10 min. in my opinion.
May 28, 2010 8:14:54 PM

+1^
Its not necessary to do a clean installation every time, but some times when you face a problem with a new driver, you have to try and do a clean installation
May 28, 2010 8:32:54 PM

I select complete uninstall option ,reboot necessary. Install new driver reboot again.
Takes 10 minutes or less. imo, writing over might not replace possible new dll's associated with CCC, that could be open ? Not sure about that. can't hurt though.

@maziar

thanks for your post.

I am still having Eyefinity+quadfire performance issues.

In addition, 10.4 and 10.5 NOW have a DP issue, where there is grey "interference" lines, periodic blinking, then goes to sleep and not waking up.

Pre 10.3 drivers did not have this issue.

Have tried stock, voltage increases, ulps fix and 2D profile fix, but to no avail. Even did a clean install.

Rolled back to 10.3.

I noticed that as well with the clocks, but only with CCC's ATI Overdrive on.

I just finished BIOS flashing my two 5850's in crossfire (woot!) so they idle at 157/300 and full speed go to 875/1200.

I noticed, however, that BIOS fan control does not work. Or rather, it works until Windows loads. I read another forum about it and it basically boiled down to either CCC or the drivers or the registry taking over fan control. Someone said they may have fixed it with a regedit. Anyway, I'm using Afterburner for fan control now although on the 2nd card it doesn't quite work properly.
May 29, 2010 6:53:07 AM

I have had 2D problems with my 5970 from the first(mostly in startups and waking ups) too and Catalyst 10.4 helped me a bit(not completely),even raising 2D clocks didn't help me.
I don't think 10.5 will help me either,but its worth a try
May 29, 2010 8:19:08 AM

Any info on what the hotfix does ? sorry im lazy tonight.
May 29, 2010 8:46:31 AM

ATI Catalyst™ 10.5a Hotfix features:
The ATI Catalyst 10.5a Hotfix provides resolution for the following issue:

* Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - Long load times for new maps when using a Windows® 7 / Windows Vista® based system with an:
o ATI Radeon HD 4xxx series graphics card
o ATI Radeon HD 3xxx series graphics card
o ATI Radeon HD 2xxx series graphics card
May 29, 2010 7:35:03 PM

oh thank goodness, I have been waiting for that fix for ages, not for me, but for my brother's computer with a 4770. His load times have still been horrific even with all the supposed fixes from ATI.

So is the hotfix something you install over the 10.5 driver or is it a whole new driver package that needs to be installed ? How should I go about this ?
May 29, 2010 7:43:06 PM

The hotfix 10.5a is here, its a complete driver package
http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/ATI-Catalyst...
it has links to pages how to install, win7 vista. Since its talked about here in this thread, they recommend uninstalling old drivers/package before new driver.
win 7 install instructions http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GraphicsDriv...
imo, if you don't have issues or play/have BFBC2, ATI is steering people to 10.5 and 10.5a for BFBC2 issues.
June 1, 2010 9:21:03 PM

Well I think I'm going to go back to 10.4. It appears from my experience and what I've read from others that 10.5 is causing wrong idles. It's for some reason idling with the UVD (unified video decoder) setting which is 400/900. After the install it was fine but then it kicks into UVD mode after a little while.... it's pretty wierd but I'm not the only one. For me it's my 2nd card in crossfire that's idling higher but the primary is normal. Others have reported it too with single card. I guess ATI messed these drivers up so yea, time to clean install 10.4.
June 1, 2010 10:02:22 PM

Well for me it actually has turned to be the best driver ever for my 5970.I had many problems with Dirt2 when i enabled CF,and also still some problems at startup with 10.4,so i did a clean install and removed all the ATI folders as well and installed 10.5 and i have no more CF problems in Dirt2 and so far i haven't had any startup problems

What problems? BSOD? Freezing? I've had a couple BSOD's at login since installing CF 5850's but I figured it's due to my also recent CPU OC... which has been pretty stable but I'm just running some long term Prime95's to make sure.
June 1, 2010 11:50:22 PM

I'm going to do a little more testing, but on my Asus EAH5850 Direct CU I had to create profiles to up my card to 400/1000 at idle (2d mode) to keep the flicker from happening with my dual monitor setup.

After the update to 10.5 I noticed there was no more flicker at startup before I could apply my profile; the card was already at 400/1000.
June 2, 2010 3:44:26 AM

I was REALLY happy with the Catalyst 10.4 update. It fixed all my issues with BFBC:2 and Crysis. My load times were reduced DRASTICALLY. The whole reason I downloaded Catalyst 10.5 was because all over the release notes they claimed "120hz support" in 5 different points of the notes. I downloaded it mainly for the "120hz support" but still can't choose a refresh rate higher than 75hz. Other than that, my idle GPU clock speed & Memory clock speeds are running 150-200% of what they were before. Also, my core temps on the 1st card is up 67% @ idle and my 2nd card's core temps are also up 24%. Is this bad? I don't think so. I am seeing where AA in games like MW2 and BFBC:2 are running a lot smoother and FPS are definitely higher than they were before. So, in all, I'm really happy about Catalyst 10.5 except I CAN'T SELECT 120HZ!!!

I downloaded it and my idle speed went from 157 Mhz to 400 Mhz, as well as my idle temp jumping from about 38 C to 51 C! I am not sure I like this. Installing the hotfix as we speak. Appears it lowered my idle back down to 157 Mhz. Might want to skip this one for now, folks.

Not BSODs,Actually some times when i turned on my PC,sometimes after the boot,it froze so it didn't load the windows or sometimes when i went to windows, for few seconds everything froze and i saw many colors and dots on the screen, but after few seconds it was fine, but with 10.5 i haven't experienced any of those yet

I have seen many users reporting an increase in temps and 2D clocks, and many of them fixed this issue by doing a clean install of the driver
June 2, 2010 1:57:11 PM

I'm going to try a fresh driver install because after I removed all my profiles I was still at 400/1000 at idle. No flicker though, which is nice.
Since I had to manually bump my speeds to 400/1000 to avoid the flicker I'm actually happy if this sticks after the fresh install.

Slight off topic....

After I updated to 10.5 I downloaded a new version of GPUZ and now it has 2 voltage readings that weren't there before. I"m wondering if this is due to the driver or GPUZ....
June 2, 2010 2:03:42 PM

You mean the voltages in sensor tab ? (Called VDDC and VDDCI)

I have this issue as well but only on my 2nd card in crossfire. However I noticed loading something like FurMark makes the speeds go to their max temporarily, and when they drop back down they go to the normal 157/300. But then for some reason it jumps back up again to 400/900 intermittenly. It still works normally tho, but I find it odd that it wants to idle in the "unified video decorder" speeds (ie: the speed it runs at to watch a dvd).

Maziar said:

Yes, they weren't there using the previous version and 10.4 for me.
June 2, 2010 10:58:54 PM

Complete removal and reinstallation of CCC 10.5 yeilds:
400mhz core and 1000 mhz memory default.
No flickering
Temps seem average for this speed (51@30%fan), ambient is 24.9C

GPUz 4.3 added VDDC Offset (1.0688V) and VDDC Current % OCP (7.3%), not the driver.

June 3, 2010 9:28:52 AM

Well you can try to set your 2D clocks to 157/300 by making a profile, but i am not sure that you will get flickering or not
June 3, 2010 2:28:04 PM

Once I installed 10.5 drivers I tried playing oblivion (that is what I am playing right now anyways), and everything looked terrible and some meshes were gone and the grass was all one big blur. So I had to completely reinstall the game as well as install all 30+ mods I am running on that game. So I think I will probably wait until I am done beating that game before I install the latest drivers.
June 3, 2010 3:25:09 PM

I used Furmark to see my performance was before I installed the 10.5 drivers. I scored a 4803. I have a 5850. intel E8400 O/C'd 3.6 ghz and 4 gigs ram Win 7 Pro and ASUS P5K-E. After install of 10.5. I scored 4996 in furmark. and I ran the test 5 times before and 5 times after 10.5 driver. Its a small boast. But a boast in the right direction.

Nice! Good to see some results. I was debating going back to 10.4 just because one of my cards likes to idle higher (400/900) but... I like more FPS :D
June 3, 2010 4:22:12 PM

Does anyone know what controls what speeds the card idles at? I'm surprised there are differences. Maybe it's in the BIOS from the manufacturer?

So far it seems the 5xxx cards will idle at:

157/300
400/900
400/1000

My card has always defaulted to 400/1000, the only change I've noticed is that with the 10.5 driver the card will not fall to 157/300 in 2d mode when over clocking is active.
June 4, 2010 5:08:08 PM

10.5 appears to be out for my computer's blood. Installing it resulted in nearly regular BSOD, and now, despite removing it and using older drivers, my computer's speed has been reduced drastically; even a mundane task like opening a folder or the start menu seems to be handled with some difficulty. Playing games is much of the same.
And I have no idea how to fix it...
Anonymous
June 5, 2010 2:35:43 AM

I reverted to 10.4, clean install. This 10.5 "update" is one worth skipping.
June 5, 2010 2:41:16 AM

One quick note to the Oblivion player, be sure to force SuperSampling AA in CCC, otherwise the trees/grass gets blurred solid by the AA.
June 7, 2010 5:05:00 AM

My problems are still there...although normal video works (VLC avi's etc.)...i get regular freezing, and am forced to restart while watching youtube videos...or any web based video for that matter.
