4890HD or 5830HD?

I have been looking at video cards, as I will be upgrading my whole setup soon anyway. I have always been buying Nvidia cards for awhile, but never had anything against ATI. I hear lately that ATI cards give a lot more bang for your buck so I found 2 standard ATI cards that look good. I will be upgrading from a standard 8800 GT.

My friend has a 4890HD and seems pretty satisfied with it, but I also was interested in the latter card because its DX11 and would be a little more future proof (something impossible in the PC hardware world). I was also intrigued by it because I already have MW2 and don't care to play AvP so I could possibly sell the coupons and turn that card into like a $150 to $180 purchase. One last thing too on the HD583XZNFV, is it less than, equal, or more than in terms of power compared to the 4890HD? I had noticed it had 50 less MHZ on core clock.

Core clock isn't the be all and end all, in fact there's so many things that contribute to a graphics cards speed that a single thing like the core clock speed really isn't that important.

Both cards offer very similar performance, as you've mentioned the HD5830 is DX11 compatible where as the HD4890 is not. If it was me I would get a HD5770 and overclock it as much as possible, a HD5770 is on par with a HD4870 which is roughly 15% slower than a HD4890 which can mostly be made up by overclocking.

If you don't plan on overclocking then go for the HD5830 and sell the coupon, or save up another $60 and buy a HD5850.

Thank you for your advice. If I were to get the 5830, does anyone think people would buy AvP for PC? I am sure I could eventually sell MW2 for PC. I have the idea that no one would actually buy AvP for PC and that everyone in the world already has MW2, plus the fact its prob a lot more popular on X-box and PS3 than PC.

hahaha, now if that wink and *hint hint* is implying to give it for free, its not out of the question but I definitely would want to get a little of my money back! If you would want to buy it though, id sell it for like $20 or so bucks lol.

I personally believe that, the former position of the 4890 and the gtx 275 is now a huge void where the somewhat overpriced 5830 now lives, if you can sell the game coupons on your 5830 to make of for some of the price the go for it, otherwise make the slight downgrade to the 5770 or upgrade to the 5850

Ok I have a new question, an update! I randomly decided to prob go with the 5850 and it was just a thought, but I have managed to find a GTX 295 on ebay for $300. This is a great deal it seems, for the performance a GTX 295 would give. Now the debate is should I get the GTX 295 or get the 5850 for DX11? Both would be the same price.

Go for the HD5850, it is the best deal on the highend at the moment. That card can overclock a ton(40%+) which will put its performance on par with the GTX 295 but it will also give you DX11, no SLI scaling compatibility issue and use vastly less power.
There was actually a thread just yesterday with someone who decided to sell his GTX 295 specifically to get an HD5850 instead.
This would be an excellent choice;

sure the 5850 can overclock a ton but your gtx 295 and still overclock some, putting it still over the 5850, it's really up to do you want dx 11 or maybe a 15% performance boost in 10dx or 9
