Upgrading 8600gts - 5770?

Last response: in Graphics & Displays

I'm really just after something that will run current gen games reasonable.

In particular bad company 2 with all the bells and whistles, at 1680 x 1050

I have an e7500 which I can't overclock as my mobo doesn't allow it (asus p5kpl cm)
2gb ram and running on xp.

my psu is around 450w or similar- thinking will need to upgraded.

Will this suffice? Will a 5770 allow for BC2 40+ frames?

Thanks in advance. Ben.

I'm not sure you'll get 40+ frames in BC2 with a 5770 and your processor. I'm sure others will chime in, but I think I read more than one place that BC2 is optimized for quad cores. This shouldn't dissuade you from trying it out. The 5770 is a pretty darn good card and can run almost anything at your resolution with no probs. And you can OC the 5770 like mad. I've got an xfx 5770, but I've also got an i5 750 and it runs bc2 awesome.

the 5770 would be a very good step up, you can try the used marker for a cheap socket 775 quad if you really wanted to have better FPS in BFBC2

Yes, it will be a major step from your 8600GTS...
What about PSU? brand? model? we need amperage not wattage... :)

hmm upgrading to a quad could be pricey coming from a place where your not going to find second hand components.

As for the psu, I really know next to nothing about them :/
I checked it physically and all the numbers meant nothing to me other than it was 400watts,and the brand Is Icute.

-5v -12v -5vsb
1.0a 1.0a 3.0a
5w 12w 15w

A 6 pin 75w cable is required for the 5770 but I don't know If I have one.

I'm sure this psu isn't sufficient, but would this be? - this

thats a POS power supply. i would not trust it to run a 5770.

as other have stated, BC2 is requires a quad core to run well, as its one of the most demanding titles out there right now.

if you want everything turned on, at that res, you will need the new GPU (and a new PSU for it) as well as a new CPU. it will be a very expensive upgrade if you really want to max the game out and get good framerates.

Yup, change your PSU with a high quality one... :)

Lowering your resolution might help a bit, since you only has E7500.
