Apparently Canon is using a very old MJPEG codec to create
movie files in their S1 IS camera. Gspot says the codec is
"Motion JPEG including Huffman Tables", which, according to
other websites is a format that existed before the MJPEG
standard was even finalized.

Has anyone found a workaround for this? All I'm trying to do
is demultiplex and make some very basic edits.

Thanks.

Adobe Premiere supports Motion JPEG. Import it into Premiere, edit it and
export it as an MPEG, or what other format you want.

Actually, thinking about it, Premiere maybe a bit expensive just to do this.
I am sure there must be other cheaper image editing software which will
allow you to import MJPEG.

I didn't have any problems with it. I tried Ulead's Video studio and
CyberLink's Power Director - both can read it just fine. Except saving in
same codec require special jpeg movie codec to be installed - but you can
save in Divx, XVid etc...
But, i must admit i was a bit surprised, too when i saw S1 uses motion jpeg
format. On the other hand, it's still better than Olympus, which uses
quicktime which needs quicktime player to be installed, while for S1 you
don't need install anything to watch movies. Maybe in the future cameras
will use other codecs, like Divx, Xvid, MPEG...but i guess it will require
waaay more powerfull processor than it is now in cameras...

The QuickTime file format is publicly documented, as is MJPEG. Many
stand-alone players can read the Oly movie format.

Yes, there's Virtualdub, a free program that is capable of opening the avi
and then saving it in a different avi format.

Thanks Mark. That's exactly what I was looking for.
