How to see whats plugged in to your computer

Hello,

I have an external drive that was pulled from an HP crashed computer. Was working for a while on my old desktop but stopped working, and now i have an old Dell that I just installed Windows and my external HDD drive is still not working. Is the problem with the drive, or the USB, or the Computer, and how can I attempt to fix this and access my data?

most times with drives in encloses the controller card in the case goes bad. sometime you have to pull the drive and connect it to the mb. before you do that you can try running http://www.piriform.com/recuva
or other drive recovery programs to see if they see the data on the drive as is. hopfully the drive has power and is moving in the case.
