Will athlon 440 bottleneck GPU?

Finishing a budget gaming rig over hear, I have an athlon 440 cpu paired with an asus 785m, 785g chipset motherboard. For a gpu I'm planing on adding a 5850 or a gtx 470. Will there be a huge bottleneck? Or, with a budget of 300 dollars, will it be better to swap cpus for a phenom 955 x4 and get a 5770?

  1. I skimmed through it, and saw that there was a pretty nice difference between the two cpus... So, it is not worth it to buy a high end 470 / 5850?

  2. Based on this page and your resolution http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/athlon-ii-x3-440-gaming-performance,2619-6.html a high end card would be in order and an overclock on the CPU would reduce the bottleneck. They would still perform better than the cards below but if I was buying today for your resolution I would go with GTX460 1GB.

an oc to what? is 3.5GHz good? Will I need an aftermarket cooler?

You can get a moderate overclock on the stock cooler but specific GHz is hard to specify since 2 of the same CPU might not overclock the same. A good after market cooler usually allows for higher overclocks you can look it up in the overclocking section http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/forum-29-179.html
