To recover special files you could try TestDisk (freeware).
Since you lost the files by deleting partition you could try partition recovery, after read this review: http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,222251-order,... AOMEI Partition Assistant Home Edition (freeware) could do this operation

Use Windows Recovery Software to recovers data from formatted Windows partitions having FAT and NTFS file systems. It completely repairs the drives and recovers deleted, permanently deleted, lost and inaccessible data files and allows the users to reuse them. You can find on such software from http://www.recoveryfiles.org/windows-data-recovery.html. Additionally, you can recover files and folders from any version of Windows operating system.

Hi Landers,

You have several good suggestions for file recovery, some of which are free, some have a trial period.
One of the most important things to know is to NOT do anything else to the external HDD, until you are ready to try to recover those files. If you run any programs from that disk, or save any data on it, they will write over some of the data you want to retrieve.
