ok so i bought the Sims recently and installed it but it said I needed to upgrade my card to shader model 2.0. I'm really confused on where to start. I was wonderin if someone could recommend me a card.
Here's some information:
Current card:
NVIDIA GeForce2 mx/mx 400 card
approx. total memory: 64.0 MB

Processor: AMD Sempron(tm) processor 2600+, mmx, 3dnow, ~1.6GHz
Memory: 1024MB RAM

If you need to know anything else just let me know :)  thank you.

I would recommend you upgrade the whole system instead, because your RAM and CPU aren't good for gaming too

That would probably be the best idea but i dont have that sort of money. Just thought it'd be worth finding out to see if there's anyway it'd work. Thanks anyway :)

Your motherboard can only accept either an AGP or PCI video card AGP and older interface, PCI is an ancient interface. Download CPU-Z to find out:

Here's an AGP card:

Here's a PCI card if your motherboard does not have an AGP port:

Do not confuse the ancient PCI port with the current PCI-e port.

luckily Sims 3 is not demanding, download CPU-Z that jaguar linked and see what kind of graphic slot you have.

If it's AGP 4x you're out of luck as far as a new card goes unless there are still 4x/8x cards around.

EDit: Is it the 8x cards that fit 4x & 4x don't fit 8x or the other way round?

4x should work in 8x slots, you would need specific 8x AGP cards that could work in 4x slots...as i recall, its been a while....

It's worrying that I can recall the time when we looked forward to this new fangled AGP interface thingy that was going to be so brilliant for graphics when it got here and now I can just about remember what it was. :(

LOL I'm with you there mousemonkey. I remember switching from PCI to AGP and thinking it was way cool. I honestly don't even remember 4x AGP.... as sad as that is.

I imagine with an older system like the OP has, we're probably talking about an old 15" or 17" CRT monitor. So The Sims3 may run okay with an old GPU in it with settings lowered.

The Sims 3 may not be super demanding by today's standards, but I've played it (along with my wife). And upgraded video cards do indeed show response improvements.
