hello I recently went in to buy hd 5770 but instead got a hd 5850 and was pretty happy until i came back....it installed fine and everything I did download the latest drivers from ATI...but I keep getting this strange gray screen with lines..???and its just not fixing..what to do??
My os is win 7 x 64 all updated
e8400 @ 3 GHZ
4gb ram ddr2 @ 800Mhz
gx 650 watt cooler master..
grrr m frustrated...
though index shows its rating as 7.7 but still only after a minute or 30 sec of need for shift gameplay GRAY screen :(

Hey :)
Well HD 5xxx series mostly have 2D problems(such as gray screen),but it shouldn't happen in 3D games.
Try testing other games and check the results and make sure you have the latest VGA drivers installed,if they didn't help,then try raising your 2D clocks,here is how

1_Open CCC and choose Overdrive tab,unlock the settings(by clicking on the " Gold Key" icon)
2_Go top options,profile and choose profile manager.
3_In the composition tab,choose "The following settings" and in the "ATI Radeon HD 5900 series"make sure only ATI overdrive is checked.
Then enter a profile name,then save and close it(Do not activate).
4_Go to C:\Users\Your UserName\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Profiles (Its hidden so make sure you unlock hidden files and folders)
5_Open the profile with wordpad and do this edits:
<Feature name="CoreClockTarget_0">
<Property name="Want_0" value="40000" /> (default is 15700)

<Feature name="MemoryClockTarget_0">
<Property name="Want_0" value="90000" /> (default is 30000)

Save the changes and close.

6_Open CCC,in options tab go to profiles,profile manager and choose the profile that you saved before and then click on Activate and close.

Okay I have tested few other games like prototype call of duty modern warfare 2 , sb09 I guess these games are not very demanding for this card
and this is what happens :
after a minute or so In all these games..the screen jitters or froze maybe for like 5-6 seconds than it get backs to normal..thn after a minute it froze and thn everything hangs...and i have to restart....
Is minimum frequency of this graphic is the problem???
M lost lol ..

is it the fact that the graphic card keeps this low frequency when on 2d apps and as it increases the frequency in 3d apps it gets stuck...
Cze whenever i am playing the screen gets stuck again after a minute it resume..works fine again gets stuck and same thing with sound looping..and finally it crashes..
Please tell what to edit in this file?

Yes all default i havent touched this....now i have been playing shift in windowd mode and the ati gives message ' the drivers have crashed and successfully recovered' and then it freezes again waits again starts..
i can see my 320 $ going in trash....ati...is beep beep :((

The last thing i can recommend is to do a clean install of Catalyst 10.5,here is how
1_Download and install "Driver sweeper" from Guru3d.com and install
2_Go to add/remove programs and uninstall the driver and reboot
3_Boot to safe mode and open driver sweeper,then click on ATI and then click on clean
4_Reboot and boot normally to windows and install 10.5 again, after that you need to restart,and its done

Well I did everything...again I downloaded 10.4 drivers..and downgraded both the frequencies by 50 MHz and fan speed 100 % and wow..no problem for the past 1 hour lol..m happy ..m too tired now..I was banging my head everywhere..tomorrow..I ll give it a try for few more hours..
so sorry for the double..post..
thnks m8

Oh well I guess its a bad card maybe...but even with down frequencies of hd5850 like 50 Mhz (650 mHZ and 950 mhz)..is it going to be a very big impact on performance? games seems to be running fine..now..though..or should I get it replaced..? ( i ve 17 " LCD )

Well I don't know about that I mean mine run at 875/1200 stock volts. Personally I'd be very mad about a card that can't even run at 700/1000. I'd do what I can to RMA it and get a good one.

Its working fine now @ 725/950 with auto fan speed...I ll get it changed in a day or two. I am just wondering why reducing the memory speed by 50Mhz fixed things for now at least?
Test few more games..
naah it crashed too:( ....... still 675/950(max) @ 100 % fan. working only..no crash for nfs shift for non stop 2 hours..mmmm
any other 3 d stress tools?

How much FPS drop could happen with this frequency?? bcse i cant figure out..game is smooth very smooth some jitters only when there r like 15 cars on the track...
bcse it crashes with 725/1000 in less thn a minute...

This card can't run 8xAA in most games. You generally should stick with 4xAA. There's a thread on it but the short of it is that AA is bottlenecked by gpu mem speed.

Back to your issue, the difference from you speeds and stock is pretty insignificant so maybe 1-2fps in Shift. But your card should be capable of a lot more. In furmark at 0xAA I gained 9fps avg from 725 to 775 core. With 4xAA the gain was 5fps from 1000 to 1125 mem. Again, with AA I proved that core speed doesn't matter.

I'm pretty sure you have a gimped card because the frozen grey screen is something I saw from overclocking too high - like at 900/1250 stock volts. Every other type of crash like BSOD is related to other issues lime CPU or mobo or RAM. The fact that you're getting it at or below stock frequencies smells of trouble.

Well It never happened again when i turned it to 675/950 its been like 5 hours now..non stop playing shift..and temp is like 63 64 nd 60 with 40-50 max gpu load...and what is catalyst AI?
I will stick to it for a while..and see..
thanks for the info :)

Catalyst AI is for disabling/enabling CrossFire.
The idle clocks of a 5850 is 157/300,but i have seen users reporting that they are getting 400/900 for idle clocks in Catalyst 10.5,so try the method i posted before and instead of 400/900,enter 157/300 and then set your 3D clocks to normal(725/1000)
So it should be this like this:

<Feature name="CoreClockTarget_0">
<Property name="Want_0" value="15700" />

<Feature name="MemoryClockTarget_0">
<Property name="Want_0" value="30000" />

Save the changes and close.

6_Open CCC,in options tab go to profiles,profile manager and choose the profile that you saved before and then click on Activate and close.
