How come the "experts" don't use wrist straps?

Hi.

I see a lot of "experts" on various pc building videos, etc. that just touch the motherboard all over and rough handle it etc, even not using a wrist strap for grounding (I don't use one either, I just touch some bare metal first). Are mobos less susceptable to EDC than we think or are they just brave?

I've never touched a cpu or mobo and damaged it due to electrostatic discharge.

thanks :)

First you should always wear a wrist strap. After that I always touch a ground.

That said, it depends upon your work environment - what flooring, surfaces, humidity and clothes you're wearing. In my hobby room I have a granite top, moderate humidity, no plastic chairs and I'm standing on a tile floor which are all low risk. However, in the winter yeah buddy I'm wearing a strap.

Every time I touch a component I'm in the unconscious habit of grounding myself first.

Otherwise, those folks in the videos are risking damage.

thanks Jaquith. By the way, I built my new computer and it's running nicely, but I'm gonna reapply the thermal compound. Here's my build:

ASUS P8P67 (vanilla)
intel i5 2500k
8 gigs GSkill Ripsaw (4x2) 10666
NVIDIA 9600 GT 512mb card
WD 500 gb HDD 32mb 7200 RPM SATA 3
Windows 7 64 bit OEM

If your careful, you don't need a wrist strap.

I always touch something metal before I pick up any parts.

I only hold components by the edges, so I don't touch any chips or traces or capacitors.

I keep all parts in or on static bags when they are laying on the table.

I don't work anywhere near carpet, period.
