Okay, the relatives that are visiting Brazil for two years now are inquiring
about a flash unit for the D70. Is the SB-800 AF the flash of choice for
this camera?

I have a Canon 20D and my wife gave me a 580EX flash unit early for
Christmas. It seems to be very adequate for my purposes. Is the SB-800 AF
comparable to this unit?

Thanks all and Mary Christmas to all of you!

Yes again. It's the ideal flash for the D70.

OR....you can go with the SB-600. A little less power and features but also
a little cheaper

Price difference between 600 and 800 is about 70 bucks since there's a 50
dollar rebate on the 800 (end soon!).
The 800 has more power, tilts down 7 degrees, has built in bounce card, 5th
battery case for faster recycles, comes with a snap on diffuser and two gels.
The 800 will also control other flashes as a master. All in all, probably worth
the 70 bucks.

The SB-600 is only marginally less powerful (2/3 stop less), and it can
act as a master to control other flashes just like the 800. The 600 is
a little lighter, recycles in almost half the time of the 800, and has
a clearer LCD screen. It's missing the 800's repeating flash, sync
socket, and modeling light, features I find useless. It's a steal at
under $200.

According to Nikon, the SB600 only has a slave mode. It can't control other
flashes like the 800. The 800 has a diffuser included (A must have). That's 20
bucks added on to the 600 right there. The power difference is not
small....about 25%. With the 800 you also get two gels along with the diffuser.
The 800 has greater flash zoom range. The tilt down feature is very useful as
well. To illustrate the range difference, the 600 coverage is 14-85, while the
800 is 14-105. When you snap the diffuser dome on the the 800, it automatically
sets to wide coverage. Nice. The SB800 also has a modeling light. Pres it and
you get a bright strobing light that lets you preview how the light is falling.
Again, nice. The SB800 also has built in Su-4 mode, allowing for both the D70
and the 800 to contribute to exposure.
If you can "handle" the 2.2 ounce weight difference, you get a lot more flash
for 70 dollars with the SB800. Without the 800's rebate, the 600 is a nice low
cost alternative.

Beach Camera has the SB600 for around $180. The lowest price I've seen so
far.

After rebate the SB800 is 259.00 and Tristate camera in NY. Keep in mind that
the diffuser for the 600 is 20 bucks and you really need it. That makes the
price diff 60 bucks and then the 800 also gives you quite a bit more...power,
angles down, gels, modeling light, wireless commander mode and so on...both
great flashes. I think 60 bucks isn't much of a jump to own the "greater"
flash.

Good luck,

RB

Thanks all of you (Bobsprit, Eager, Rainy) for the comments. I've decided
on the SB800. It sounds like a dynamite flash!
