INTEL vs AMD: Phenom II X6 1090T vs Core i5-750

Im building a new pc and I was planning to get the Intel Core i5-750 2.66GHz but I got some extra money recently and I think I can afford something a little bit better.

My current options are the Intel Core i5-750 2.66GHz LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor, the Intel Core i7-920 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor aaaaaand the AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Six-Core Desktop Processor

This is driving me crazy, I've been with INTEL always and switching to AMD sounds like going to the "dark side".

I will use my new system to do some gaming, Photoshop CS5, Dreamweaver CS5, watch some HD movies, and internet browsing (I like to open LOTS of tabs).

Please help me decide! I don't know any other options for $200-$350

Photoshop will take advantage of the extra cores of X6 very well but you don't need the 1090T. The 1055T is 100 dollars cheaper and will overclock easily to 4.2Ghz+.

Spend the extra 100 dollars saved on a better gpu

What about gaming? I will spend more time gaming than working on photoshop.

The 1055t is not a very stable cpu for gaming. You should get the 1090t.

i5 750 is much better than 6core if your gaming. not all games take advantage of the 6core. and you need a good gpu. i5 750+ati 5850 will do

Best solution

If gaming is your primary concern then I would go with the i7 920 and overclock it. The 920 is worth the extra money over the 750 especially since some parts of CS5 will make use of the multiple threads. While it's true that the similarly priced 1090T would beat the 920 in certain threaded applications, the picture changes a bit with gaming especially when you overclock those CPUs. For games that don't make use of 4 cores, many show little benefit with more than 3, the1090T will preform alot like a X4 955. After all, the 1090t is very similar with the exception of the extra cores. If you plan to crossfire, the difference in CPU horsepower will be even more pronounced.

BTW, Intel is the dark side :D .

I wish I could say go AMD for gaming but if you can afford a 920 there is no good AMD argument unless you spend most of your time with Photoshop filters that would run better on the 6-core AMD. I'm hoping this will change for AMD with the release of bulldozer.

Seems like a 1055T is a much better buy than a similarly priced amd x4, as apparently the 1055T can overclock quite well.
Does seem to be behind the i5 750 but still fast and maybe will be faster later for games that use more cores.

Is it true that dx11 has something to do with allowing games to use more cores? I read that on a forum and was curious if anyone else had heard anything like that.

I would go with a core i5 save the money for a better gpu

INDEED AMD X6 IS BY FAR MUCH MUCH BETTER THAN ANY I7 IN GAMES THAT RUNS IN DIRECT X11 mode I have both and tested i7 has a 30% performance drop in dx11 games comparing to Amd x6 that's because PHENOM II X6 SERIES HAVE SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS that sustain applications that runs in dx11 mode, unfortunately AMD simply just hide this fact don't know why??? but it's true, sorry but my core i7 and yours is already outdated for native dx11 aplications and will cost us some - fps when all graphic programs especially native dx 11 games will implement dx11 but until then well......... today's cpus will be obsolente, sorry for bad news Intel fan boys,I'm so mad to Intel but that's true if you don't belive it just test it,you will see a clear dorp in performance fps for i7 in dx11 games vs amd x6 (note that in dx 9 and dx 10 core i7 performs much better),shame Intel shame shame that's because dx11 take huge advantage of native native native multi core design (core i7 has 4 real and 4 virtual cores and amd x6 has 6 real cores)dx11 take huge advantage from real cores(amd) not fake ones(Intel).SHame Intel, lot of money for high performance in dx9 and dx10 games and so pore performance in native dx 11 games you realy need a super performant dx11 video card to hide the differences.

What bullshit you say mr. marianxtreme. DX11 doesn't make a *** of difference voor your CPU, also DX11 is nothing, just look how good Crysis 2 looks (YES, ITS OLD DX9!). Even the cheap i5's will beat any AMD x4/x6 they have in games(and in most benches too).

It's easy to do - and happens all too often.
They're saying the 'next version' of THG forums will alert someone when they're about to hit an old topic.
