I have a WD Hard Drive that was set up with 4 partitions.
I tried to clone it using EasyUS Partition clone software.
When I tried the clone it would not boot.
I figured it was not set “active” so I booted into Partition Magic 8 and found it was flipping out and would NOT do anything with the drive. (EasyUS and Partition Magic do not like one another…)
SO OK I figured I would just start over and do the clone in DOS with Symantec Drive Image, so I booted (in Dos) to Drive Image and as it launched it stopped and said there was an error in something..and would I let it repair it.
Sadly I thought it was dealing with the failed drive that Partition Magic found unworkable: the failed drive so I OKed it, and a few more times as It keep asking, then Drive Image itself locked up.
So pulling the floppies and I tried to boot the original hard drive to find it stops at the Starting Windows window…at the flag…Did a net search found a bunch of ideas none worked.
OK Tried: Recovery, no go, tried loading the windows 7 DVD but it will not boot(!!!???) tried rebooting back into drive image and it will not boot. I then tried a couple of my older DOS floppy and could not boot any of them with the drive on line.
OK Figured I would just run the bad drive as a slave on a good system, BUT IT WILL NOT BOOT EITHER, IF this drive is hooked up it stops all booting. OF any OS be it DOS, windows 98, XP and 7.
So tried putting it in a external drive case and plugging it in as a USB Drive after the system had booted, at first try windows IDed the drive but hung loading a driver..External drive got funky and keep asking to format drive, returned it to store.
Took the drive to a local data recover shop they had no luck not even in Linux.
Took it to Fry’s Electronics and watch them hook it up as a nearly direct USB device and they could not get it to open. Bought the adapter cable and tried again with it myself.
I then called Western Digital to see if they could help, and got to a level two tech who asked me to down load their drive Diag. Software.
So I plugged it in again with the new direct USB cable this time the system was able to install a driver for the drive, so now it is IDed correctly by BIOs and by device manger BUT NOT IDed or visible by windows, drive manger, by WD Diag. and not by R-Studio data recover software.
ALSO IF plugged in as a USB device it will stop Windows from booting at the same spot of “Windows Starting” until it is unplugged from the USB port and which point windows will finish the boot in 3 seconds…AND if left plugged in as a USB device will stop “shut down” until it is unplugged, and which point unplugging will allow complete shutdown again within seconds.
I just wasted a couple of hours with Notronlive service to finally talk with a tech who then asked why I was even forewarned to him and he could do nothing with a locked drive. I called Norton as they used to own and sell and service Partition Magic and Drive Image.
I am waiting for Western Digital lever three tech to call , but it is not 2:00 PM and no call yet.
I think I have a looping Master Boot Record or something like that.
