Configure external dns servers exchange

I want to configure my exchange server for external mail server right now I am using third party software to download email

Well... you'll probably need to get your mx records updated to point to the new mail sever and you'll need that mail server publically available. IMHO I'm not a big fan of putting a windows box out on the internet with a public IP... I'd probably consider setting up a sendmail relay or 3rd party spam / AV component before letting it hit my Exchange server.

I don't use Exchange server, put you're telling me it can't retrieve email from pop servers w/o the assistance of third party software, or being placed in the public IP space? How can that be?

I thought the question was in regards to hosting his own mail server, not pulling mail down from 3rd party pop/imap servers. I guess I may have mis-understood his question?
