can a loud noise such as a gunshot cause a computer to fail or shut down?

  1. I'm not even going to ask what happened :D

Proximity among a boatload of other things would determine the effect, but I can't see sound waves of that strength doing any damage. That's just my unprofessional, personal opinion though.
  2. Technically a loud enough noise could generate a strong enough pressure wave to knock something loose or shatter some hardware but at that point its closer to the pressure wave from a small bomb.
  3. If it is a gunshot noise which resulted from a gun pointed at the computer while shooting due to the computer repeated freezing, then Yes it can fail but not from the noise.
