My system is as follows:

AMD Athlon 64x2 5400+ (oc'd to 3.1)
Foxconn A7DA
G. Skill ddr2 4GB
Sapphire ATI 4780 Toxic Vapor-X
WD 640 GB 7200 rpm Black
Windows 7 64-bit
Samsung SyncMaster T220 22"
600w PS
Zalman 9500A

My question is whether or not to upgrade my CPU to maybe a Phenom II x3 740 BE or Phenom II x4 940 BE to get another year out of my present system, or leave it for now until I am wanted to do a total upgrade?

I play a few games, nothing very intense. I would like to play Starcraft 2 and Dragon Age. I am very happy with my ATI card, never had any issues with heat or performance. I feel my CPU is dated and my be slowing me down.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

the pc is not that bad, a 720/740/945 will give you a few years well

Ah ... thank you. Would I need to update the Bios if I install either of those CPUs?

Yeah, stick in the fastest phenom x4 your motherboard can support and you should be right for a few more years. Its always a good idea to update the BIOS to the latest available, especially before installing a newer CPU.

Yes first update your BIOS to the newest version, then insert a PII X4 945, it should give you a big boost in every app. you use. (especially in Dragon Age that you intend to play;))

I decided to buy the Phenom II 740x3 BE. I don't need the cooler and it was cheap. I will probable upgrade after Bulldozer is released.

OK that's a good choice, you will notice a big difference:)  Especially if you OC that chip.
