2x2 cpu connector with a 2x12 atx connector?

Can I use a 2x2 connector with a 2x12 or do I need to only use a 2x4 with the 2x12 and 2x2 with 2x10?

More about connector 2x12 connector
  1. It all depends on what your board wants, check the motherboard manual to see what it needs.

The larger connector powers the motherboard, while the smaller only powers the CPU so if the board is only built for lower power CPUs it might only want a 2x2 but might need the 2x12 for its onboard components, there arent set rules that say if you use A you must also use B it all depends on the board.
  2. Motherboard manual doesn't really say. It says that it can accept either 2x4 and 2x12 or 2x2 and 2x10 but it doesn't say whether or not mix them.

Okay, then it really doesnt matter. The board will only use the power that it needs if it only needs to use the 2x10 and you plug in a 2x12 it just wont draw power from the extra 4 pins so its perfectly fine to mix and match, the connector doesnt push the power into the component it just makes it available if needed.
