This is the first time I've built a computer from scratch. I've tried to do as much research as possible, much of it was through this forum, which has been invaluable. I tried to put together parts that work together so I'm not wasting your time. I really like the i5/5850 combo. I had the hardest time picking the ram, case and mobo. Im looking for suggestions, a heads up if any of the parts won't work well together or are just plain crap. Im also wondering what I would have to do if I wanted to overclock or crossfire in the future (2 years or so). Here we go....

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: within 2 weeks; sooner the better BUDGET RANGE: 800-1000, cheaper is better

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: gaming, word processing

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: i will buy from anywhere if it is the cheapest option (newegg.com, amazon, micro center) COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: USA

PARTS PREFERENCES: really like the i5/5850 combo

OVERCLOCKING: Maybe SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Maybe

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1920x1080

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: I would like a quiet PC if that's in the budget

For microcenter you have to factor in tax. For most states and newegg you don't.

5850 you linked is out of stock, same with the open box P7p55D.

that corsair ram has some very bad timings, better off with a ripjaw kit for $5 more.

Total including shipping $969. Also another $30 savings in rebates/gift card

If you want the 1tb drive you can pick it up for $10+tax more.
You can also save $100 by getting a 5850 instead.

The motherboard is still available, you must be using a different microcenter location. I know microcenter has tax, but even with the tax it is still the cheapest place for both the motherboard (as long as open box is not a problem) and the i5-750 processor. The 8580 GPU is actually in stock as of right now.

Thanks for the insight into the RAM. I have made that change. Why did you suggest I change my HD? Is it a crappy HD? Cause microcenter has taxes? Cause I don't need 1TB?

Thanks for the advice.

Id like to stay below 900 if possible. What are the best manufacturers for cases?

If I decide to go against the open box, I can get the same mobo for $150 from amazon. Is there a cheaper mobo that I should get? I don't really know that much about mobo's other than i need a p55 and a LGA 1156 socket.
July 15, 2010 11:58:56 PM

That looks like a great board. Other than Asus, what are the good mobo manufacturers? It seems like people like Gigabyte as well.

What would give me better performance in the future? overclocking or crossfiring? If I want to do either what would I have to upgrade? Buy a cooler? obviously a second gpu.

Thanks for answering all of my questions.

Ga screwed up implementation of usb 3/sata 6 in p55. Their boards do not allow those features and xfire or even a dual gpu on a stick GPU.

SO only real option is Asus. Biostar and MSI have a few boards, but the former is cheap, the latter I haven't seen any good reviews of.

Um overclocking and xfire are separate things. One is taking yur current hardware and getting more performance out of it, the other is adding new hardware.

Obviously adding new hardware boot's performance to a greater degree, but unlike overclocking, it ain't free.

Stock HSF is fine for a mild CPU OC. If you want to increase voltage though, you'll want an aftermarket HSF.

GPU ocing is limited by ATI overdrive (unless you want to use unofficial drivers). 5870 and 5850 should all OC to the limit ati overdrive allows.

Why not going for a AMD (955 BE) build ? Why would you need more for gaming ?
