Greetings all -- I have encountered a "feature" that I believe is
a bug and wondered if anyone else had found this. Using
photoimpact pro 8.5, I edit a jpg from my camera. Save
the file to a new name.ufo so I can work with the objects etc.
If I then save a copy of the image to the new_name.jpg
(using the normal jpg options), it works fine. Now I manipulate
the image -- adding text objects, other image objects "cut"
from other images etc. Works great. Save the new version
as the same .jpg again (tell it to overwrite). Save the .ufo
so I can make changes later if I want. Life is great.
Thumbs Plus, Irfanview etc all show the new .jpg as expected.
Windows thumbnail view shows a thumbnail of the ORIGINAL
..jpg saved with none of the new information in it. It appears
the embedded thumbnail in the jpg never gets updated to the
"enhanced version" of the image. I have tried deleting the
thumbs.db file from the folder so windows has to remake the
file when is shows the thumbnails, tried refresh etc.
Has anyone else encountered this feature ?? If you open the
jpg with Irfanview or any other program, all the changes are
there (if you tell Irfanview, Thumbs Plus etc to show
thumbnails, they are also correct since it seems to make it
from the real image). It appears that ONLY the embedded
thumbnail is wrong and not updated. Is there an easy fix to
update the thumbnails in the header ??

Thanks
mikey

Hi.
I guess you are speaking of the Exif thumbnail that was created by your
camera.
This thumbnail is kept in the .jpg file (Exif header) and may be large
enough (over 30 kb).
PI doesn't handle the Exif data (at least until recent version).
When I want to place a picture on an Internet site, I externally remove the
Exif thumbnail (using JHEAD.EXE) to reduce the jpg file size.

Hello,
AFAIK Paul is correct, PIXL/8.5 doesn't handle EXIF headers. Further I
believe you'll find that all the EXIF data is stripped when you save
within PIXL/8.5. This is a mystery since Mike is seeing a thumbnail of
the original image in Windows viewer!!
Q. Reading through your procedure, it is the new name.jpg you are seeing
the old image data?
I can't understand how this can happen unless the file was copied to new
name.jpg, not opened and saved. Perhaps I didn't follow you exactly.

Another utility for manipulating headers is Photostudio. It is possibly
not as flexible as jhead, but has quite a nice interface.
Can be found at http://www.stuffware.co.uk/ (it's freeware)
You can easily insert updated thumbnail if you wish with this utility.

Thanks guys -- so many trap doors, so little time ... turns out that was
part of the issue. The other part was not understanding that winders
will use the embedded thumbnail if it finds it or makes a new one if
there is not one embedded. It also depended on exactly which order
I saved the ufo and jpg image from photoimpact - one way, the EXIF
goes away and the other, it does not. When I did a bunch of test
images and did a screen capture of the "thumbnail view" of the folder,
most of the images did not show the changes, however, after running
JHEAD -dt *.jpg, winders immediately updated the thumbnail view to
show the new thumbnails with the correct information. What had
puzzled me was that if I clicked an image that was incorrect and did
a "refresh thumbnail", it showed up correct, but if I deleted the
thumbs.db file and did a "view->refresh" it went back to the old one.
Thanks for the pointers.

I have had this happen, too - but not just in the new 8.5 version, it
happened periodically in the older previous version to me as well.

I see some folks figured out what was happening!

I'm glad you asked.

See my other question I just posted on ulead NG - about the folder
behavior in the new 8.5? The folder keep collapsing and closing each
time I move an image to a folder from PE 8.5 - annoying. I have to
open them all up again.
