Old HDD from Basic to Dynamic

I have two 40GB internal HDD I know one is western Digital from 2005 and the other is a Quantum Fireball I was wondering if it was possible to change them to dynamic disks so I can span them together. I tried but I only have a Pata to usb cord and it come up with an error. I was just wondering if this would be possible before I purchase sata bridges to install them in my desktop.

The error I keep getting is The request could not be performed becuase of an I/O device error
