They're the exact same card. An HD4850 would perform the same and you might find one for $90.

The 9800 GTX will pull a bit more juice compared to the GTS 250, the GTX is also a larger card. The best bang for buck 250 out right now is this one :

That MSI card is 512mb. I'm sure he is looking for the 1GB GTS250.

The extra 512mb is good if he has a bigger monitor than average.

The 512 and 1Gb version are basically the same when it comes to the 250. I have both and to this date I do not see a difference regardless of screen resolution.

1GB mainly affects 1920x1080 or above, where the GTS250 1GB is too weak to use anti-aliasing in any game anyways. Therefore, the 512MB memory is labeled as 'useless' by us guys.

Agree with OvrClkr, GTS250 will just fine with 512 MB.
HD4850 is a good card too, if the OP want an ATI card...

Also, as you go forward, unless he's using GPGPU applications, he's not going to get much benefit from the 1GB, because he'll be bottlenecked by core power and not be able to run insane resolutions or AA where the extra memory would matter anyways. And really it's not so much resolution that's killing it as AA ontop of resolution that's what's cratering performance at that ragged edge.

If he knows an application now that 'needs' it (like Crysis while using AA) then fine, but it's not about to improve over time.

Although if you feel the need, there's always the eVGA one with 1GB which has faster shader (Palit specs says it has faster core, but the shaders are rolled back [likely for the GreePower part] which would be a bottleneck in the future and require overclocking IMO) faster core would only be good for RBE speed.

It can make a difference at lower resolution, but really it's more of a theoretical one than a practical one, like in Crysis w/ AA;

Who wants 15avg / 9min fps @ 1680x1050 w/ 4X AA versus turning off AA and getting better avg and min framerate?
Same goes for the biggest difference at 1920x1200?

The difference is there, but it's not a practical one of major importance.

Looking at the performance in Stalker, you see that in a tough title without AA, the gap is still more of a theoretical one than a practical one, maybe arguably worthwhile in the HD4850 1GB, but even then it's under specific conditions;

I own a 9800GTX+ by ASUS I have it overclocked around 15%(I can get +20% out of it before it bugs, this much makes it unstable in games also), I run 1600x900res, have a quad AMD, 4gb DDR2 ram. Currently I can run games like Metro 2033 maxed, Age of Conan, The Sims 3, Mount & Blade, Lord of the Rings Online, Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age Origins, Batman Arham Asylum, Fallout 3.

Games I have issues with trying to run completely maxed Company of Heroes, Splinter Cell Conviction, Dirt 2, Assassins Creed 2, Crysis, NTW in large battles.

The 9800GTX+ is a good card for the price but I have never used a GTS250 but I heard nice things about them... Probably be 50/50.

i have a evga 9800gtx+ card and i really like it...u can play a lot of games maxed out but not all...i just played split second velocity and i was only able to get high settings with that card...very high made frame rate drop a lot...that made it unplayable...cod mw2 was set at max out with 4xaa and 1080p res...with almost no jutters but could also be from playing online...i recommend this card to the a little above average gamer...should suit their needs

I have 2 BFG GTS 250's, one is the 512 and the other is a 1Gb and both are running flawless for over a year now. They also overclock fairly well using MSI Afterburner.

i actually have an MSI GTS250 factory OC plus a little extra from afterburner

yes, i have the fan set to 30% plus I installed a 120mm side fan. It runs silent and idles at 40c

I love that card, I have a buddy that has 2 of them in SLI and it destroys any game @ 1680 x1050. Question is, can you over-volt using Afterburner? Cause I have tried to unlock the voltage on my 250's but it seems impossible

there was a user here on toms that said it is possible with a hacked bios but im not risking it, afterburner does the job well at stock volts.
