Can routers and switches be connected directly together

Hello, I was wondering if I can connect a switch off of my router to act as a connection point for other computers to access the internet and network. Both the router and the switch are gigabit.

ofcourse you can, but if you have a wireless router there is already built in 4 switch ports

If not , then yes you can , just make sure that ur PCs support gigabit Ethernet by having gigabiit NIC cards

Thank you for your responses! I eventually figured it out for myself. And although I do have a wireless router, I needed some way to network some
devices that weren't near the ports on the router. That is where the switch came in. I have a box that all of my media cable (CAT5 included) comes into and that is where I tied the switch in. It seems to be working ok although it doesn't recognize it enough to give it a name when I view the network map. But it works and that is what is important right? Now if I can just get my WD TV Live media device working the way its suppose to.....anyway thanks again!
