I would say kinda.

Sorry to be vague but I have a system with that spec and it still runs everything quite well today (or really well depending on the game), but some new games really strain at 1920x1080.

Games a year from now at 1080p will be pushing it. Have you overclocked your CPU or GPU? You could get a nice free boost there, the Q6600 overclocks great.

ok cool,
what demanding games do you own that your system can run well ?
i would run below 1080p but because its my native res images don't scale well below 1680x1050
i was thinking about overclocking but because i have never done it before i'm afraid of blowing my psu as its only rated at 450w.

Id want to be able to play crysis 2 at a decent setting, iv heard that crysis 2 is supposed to have lower system requirments than the original, so hopefully with some tweaking it will be possible

Hi all,

Iv been looking to upgrade from my old 3870x2 - it still performs well but every new game I buy performace is dropping away.
Just wanted to get some opinions whether a 5770 or a 5830 is going to show much of a performance increase? or if i need to get a 5850 or 5870 ?
I mainly play fps (BC2 AND MW2) as well as the RTS total war series and i am looking forward to Crysis 2.

any opinions are welcome !

3870x2 is less than a 4870. A 5770 is, for all intents and purposes, the same performance level as a 4870.

Don't buy anything less than a 5770, but for a significant boost in performance, a 5830, GTX465, or 5850 are you best options. IF you have a system that won't limit your graphics too much (aka bottleneck).

Please post the rest of the specs of your system, to be sure we can recommend something that you can utilize for the money.

EDIT: I noticed your other thread where you mentioned your specs (stock Q6600, 450w PSU) and would probably not recommend anything higher than a 5770, due to both your CPU limitation and PSU. If you were willing to replace the PSU and OC the Q6600, then you could make sure of something stronger than a 5770.

What manufacturer and watts would you recommend for the PSU , also what overclock would be necessary to benefit a 5850 at 1080p ?

Antec, Corsair, Cooler Master, Seasonic, and OCZ are brands I personally trust. The PSU should be 80+ rated (for efficiency) and have some sort of overpower/current protection, to protect your hardware in the event of a failure. Also, be sure it has the PCI-E connectors you need. If it doesn't, it probably isn't suitable. For a quadcore + 5850 I would probably go for no less than a 550-650w unit.

Just a quick run through newegg and this deal caught my eye:

I've never owned a Q6600, but have heard much accolades and recommendations about their performance and overclockability. Commonly 3.0ghz is thrown around as an easy OC to achieve with strong performance dividends. I am sure there are some actual owners who can give their own opinions and experiences.
