My computer crashed last night and is now jacked up.

Last night my computer had a rather severe glitch. I was just listening to music and then my computer locked up and was making a whining sound through the speakers. I reset and it failed to start, tried again and same, eventually it got the repair screen and it ran and then logged in. Upon logging in first thing I noticed was a ton of programs were missing from my desktop and the programs that are there still won't open. Did my SSD just die? I've never experienced anything like this before. Is there a way I can check the SSD and see if that was what failed? I'd hate to do a reformat only for this to happen again or something.
