a core2quad at 3ghz is more than enough for a gtx 470. It is extremely unlikely that it would be bottlenecked at all. Maybe in some rts strategy games, but for most games, no.
And yes, there would be a loss in performance if there was a bottleneck (but there won't be). The fps loss depends on how much bottleneck there is.

The higher the CPU clock the more frames you will get so YES there will always be a bottleneck there but it shouldn't be anything to be worried about.

Whats your screen resolution?

i have q9550 @ 2.83 and it bottenecks my 5850

it explains my low scores on 3dmark

and also i've been told by the people here that it does bottleneck

i would say that a q6600 @ 3 ghz is equal to q9550 @ 2.8 ghz

EDIT: also keep in mind that 5850 is equal to 470.
a 470 is a lil better sometimes at different games

have you tried updating the driver for your card with the latest one?
Your CPU shouldn't bottlenecking HD5850 so much...

yes, of course.

actually going from 10.4 to 10.5 resulted in weaker performance according to 3dmark06

Yea same here, I reverted back to 10.4 because I actually lost a few frames. IDK what the deal is with AMD and their drivers, you would think that at this point in time they would have a fully working driver. To this date I still cannot get v-sync to run properly in BC2 as well as in windows. I get mad screen tearing upon bootup.

You have too much GPU power for that res, your CPU is doing most of the work... So you have a MAJOR CPU bottleneck. Any plans on upgrading that screen?

The lower the res the more stress on the CPU, the higher the res the more stress on the GPU.

1600x900 is much better =), there should be a significant jump in performance..

I have a Q6600 OC'd to 3.6 and it pushed my 5870 just fine, in fact, the 5870 performed just as good in my brother's system which has an i5 750 at the same speed. Your bottleneck has to do with something else...

If you plan on staying with a 1280 x 1024 res, stick with the 9800GTX+, anything over that will be overkill by a mile.

Just like jonpaul said, if you plan on getting a bigger screen then the GTX 470 will do just fine, with your current monitor you should stick with the 9800GTX+..
